Lightwave Networks
Fiber optics has gained acceptance
almost everywhere and is still growing. Commercial deployment of early fiber
systems began only about 20 years ago with common carriers deploying
multi-mode cable systems operating at speeds less than 100 Mb/s.
Today, we find singlemode cable based gigabit (1,000 Mb/s) Ethernet optics
on desktops and carriers deploying Dense Wave Division Multiplex (DWDM)
based systems capable of transmitting at terabit (1,000 Gb/s) speeds.
